For a while I've been tossing this idea around in my head trying to decide whether or not to post it, but I'm going to post it and see what kind of feedback I get.
My idea is this: I'm tired of seeing seven strikes thrown in a single at-bat only for the pitcher to get tagged with a walk. That doesn't seem fair to me. Instead, I think there should be a new stat called an "earned base-on-balls" (EBB? EW?) for when at least three strikes are thrown in an at-bat, but a walk is the result. This would go on the batter's record and not the pitcher's, since the pitcher threw enough strikes to get an out, but the batter battled to get the walk, therefore earning the walk.
I'm not sure if this would work at a statistic, nor am I sure how easy this would be to implement into the MLB, but I am interested if other people think this idea has any merit. Thoughts?
